College Blab

I found out that I only have three more required classes to take before I earn my forensics associate degree (note that I am out of regular age to be in college... more like grad student age). Although I plan to take just about everything the school has to offer in that field (fingerprint science isn't even a required class if that tells you anything), I will at least have the degree and qualify again for lottery assistance. Then I can take the forensics classes that have the labs requirements and have fun collecting fake evidence!

Josh is really encouraging me to take the forensics road. He, however, would cringe if he had to see some of the things I'll be seeing. Funny if you think about it.

Forensics? That's very interesting. I'm a nursing student and have considered forensics as a second degree. What things would make Josh cringe? What things do you see?

Thanks!

My husband's not too thrilled about the fact that I'll be around potentially contaminated blood and otherwise unsavory objects, but he's supportive all the same!

Well, I haven't seen much :live action" so far, but one of our professors set up a live viewing of an autopsy-in-progress for a select few of us. I'll say this much: I have never smelled anything like that in my life! I don't know how to say what the 2 M.E.s were doing since I am not a doctor, but they were pulling out body parts and writing things down (my background is in retail, so to me it looked like a product inventory) and reinserting things. Yipe!

So what's the next step for you after you obtain your degree? Do you go work in a police lab or... what? I'm clueless about forensics, but very interested.

The "plan" is for me to become certified in a specific field, such as fingerprinting, ballistics, evidence collection, etc. From there, I'll feel comfortable enough to apply to my city/county PD and go through their training. From there, I'm not sure of the steps.

Last time I checked, though, they've stopped requiring forensic technicians to have 2 years street police experience. Awesome - I didn't want the cop part anyway!
